Overview

Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer and the Director of Respiratory Therapy, renders independent, professional cardio-pulmonary care and performs diagnostic procedures on patients/residents in support of their total medical care. The Assistant Respiratory Therapy Director of Clinical and Community Education will report to the Director of Respiratory Therapy and work collaboratively with the Director of Professional Development and Assistant Director of the Child and Family Education Program (CFE) to develop and implement clinical and community education programs. The role will encompass but is not limited to: coordination and oversight of the clinical rotations of the RT students; establishing partnerships with community health care and service related organizations to design and implement educational programs which will promote and build awareness of education under the scope of respiratory therapy; acts as a key resource in the orientation and continuing education of incumbent and newly hired respiratory therapy staff and other clinical disciplines and will serve as the Training Center Administrator of the American Heart Association (AHA).

Responsibilities

  • Effectively communicates objectives and scope of services provided by the department/hospital.  
  • Primarily responsible for the initial preparation of the staffing schedules and for ensuring adequate staffing at all times. Escalates issues to the Director as needed.
  • Primarily responsible for preparing the bi-weekly payroll for review and approval by the director. Escalates issues to the Director as needed.
  • Continually reviews department/hospital services and activities and recommends appropriate changes to support and meet the hospital mission and vision. 
  • Supports the clinical care of the respiratory staff, as needed.
  • Engages in direct clinical care, as needed.
  • Ensures that all policies, procedures, and systems are in compliance with NYSDOH, JCAHO and other regulatory agency standards.
  • Participates in long-range and strategic planning.
  • Views the Hospital as a whole system, identifying and weighing inter-relationships and trade-offs when planning and implementing strategic objectives.
  • Considers the long-term impact of decisions and actions and plans for contingencies.
  • Forms strategic alliances inside and outside the hospital to improve the quality, timeliness, and cost effectiveness of operations
  • Inspires and motivates staff to achieve increasing levels of performance excellence.
  • Effectively communicates with others, using persuasion and influence in order to achieve desired results.
  • Communicates hospital goals, objectives, and informational updates in a clear and timely manner to staff and peers.
  • Participates in the budgetary process, making sound recommendations for staffing, equipment, supplies and capital needs.
  • Monitors department/hospital expenses, obtaining appropriate approvals for variances.
  • Proposes and executes strategies to assure optimal use of staff, equipment, time, and financial resources.
  • Seeks innovative ways to improve service and cost structure.
  • Provides respiratory care education for other hospital departments.
  • Assists in the measurement of clinical and other performance-related outcomes.
  • Supports the department's quality and safety initiatives and regulatory readiness activities.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of experience rendering direct professional cardiopulmonary care in a hospitalor healthcare setting.
  • Minimum of two years of experience supervising respiratory care staff.
  • Sleep study experience preferred.
  • Directs and coordinates departmental activities as determined by the Director of RT and/or CNO- during the Director of RT absence.  Working knowledge of computerized software programs. Ability to meet flexible scheduling demands to meet patient/resident care and staff clinical/educational needs. This may include temporary assignments on day, evening, and night shifts inclusive of weekend and holidays.

Education, Licensure, and Certification

  • Licensed by the NYS Department of Education as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (or license-eligible).
  • Must maintain current license.
  • BLS certification required.
  • PALS certification required.
  • NBRC registration required.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing/walking.
  • Lifts supplies/equipment.
  • Requires visual acuity and manual dexterity to maintain the airway and manually ventilate the patient during.
