Overview

Under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, performs the manual technical tasks involved with the proper storage, preparation, distribution, packaging and labeling of drugs and associated record-keeping.  Follows proper procedures for the operation of equipment and use of supplies.

 

Schedule: This position will have variable shifts consisting of 7.5 hours per day throughout the week.

  • Schedules vary from 7am-3pm, 8am-4pm, 9am-5pm, 11am-7pm, 1pm-9pm.
  • Schedule includes rotational weekend coverage as well as rotational holiday coverage.
  • Schedule will also include staff coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Assists pharmacists in preparing drugs for dispensing, demonstrating accuracy and consistency relating to product selection, labeling, and repackaging functions.
  • Assists with management of drug inventory and other supplies. Reviews and places wholesaler/outside vendor orders and follows up problems. Checks orders received against packing slip, places stickers on items, places items into stock, rotates stock, and organizes storage areas.
  • Maintains adequate stock levels of medications and supplies in Pharmacy dispensing stations.
  • Checks pharmacy stock areas and Omnicell Cabinets for outdated and recalled drugs.
  • Accurately restocks Code Cart Medication Drawers and Sepsis Boxes.
  • Accurately fills assigned Patient Specific cassettes in a timely manner.
  • Accurately prepares and performs Omnicell Normal, Supplemental, PSB and Critical Low restocks in a timely manner.
  • Accurately performs Omnicell PSB tasks (transfers, discharges, and discontinued orders) in a timely manner.
  • Empties Omnicell return bins and accurately reconcile contents daily.
  • Obtains daily census, updates patient medication cassettes regarding admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Assist pharmacists in preparing new medication orders.
  • Accurately prepares stock solutions/suspensions according to department policies and procedures and completes documentation on formula worksheets.
  • Repackages all unit dose medication as required according to department policies and procedures and completes required documentation.
  • Ensure pharmacists check all work when completed.
  • Screens phone calls to minimize pharmacist interruptions
  • Accurately performs assigned duties/special projects as specified by the Director or Staff Pharmacists in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a pharmacy setting.

Education, Licensure, and Certification

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) plus a combination of training and work experiences, which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed in this position description.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician Certification from the PTCB and NYS Registered Pharmacy Technician License is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret physician orders.
  • Ability to manipulate pharmaceuticals in preparation for dispensing and operating equipment necessary for nonsterile compounding, preparing, labeling and dispensing drugs.
  • Can clearly communicate drug-related information to patients, physicians, nurses and other hospital staff verbally and in writing.
  • Agility to obtain drugs from storage areas from floor level to as high as six feet above floor level requiring reaching, bending, and stooping.
  • Able to transport medication carts and other items (weighing up to 40 pounds) to various areas of the hospital.
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware and PC Windows.
